The New Acoustic Collective features many of the top up-and-coming jazz, bluegrass, and classical musicians in the Bay Area, combining a variety of strings to bring a modern and unique sound to the New Acoustic Music canon.

This special ensemble works to bring all styles of music to bear, blending bluegrass/traditional music idioms, jazz, flamenco, classical, and beyond. The collective takes influence from every corner of the music world including the inventors of the New Acoustic Music genre, The David Grisman Quintet and The Tony Rice Unit.

Band Member Bios

Jason Keiser

(Band Leader, composer, arranger, producer, Guitar)

Jason Keiser is a professional guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, multi-stylist, recording artist, arranger and composer based out of the Bay Area currently residing in San Jose, California. In May of 2018, Jason graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old-Time, & Country Music Studies from East Tennessee State University with an academic honor of Cum Laude.

During his time at ETSU, Jason studied under member of The Tony Rice Unit, Rice Recording, Professor of Bluegrass Guitar at ETSU, professional bluegrass guitarist Wyatt Rice. Wyatt and Jason also recorded a duet project together, which is still in the works of being finished. He also studied under member of Alison Krauss & Union Station, professional bluegrass mandolinist Adam Steffey, and many more. In the jazz department Jason studied under professional jazz pianist Jason Day and in 2017 they completed a duo jazz guitar and piano recording called "Conversations with Jason". This can be heard on all digital platforms. 

Jason began his Masters of Music in Jazz Studies with an emphasis in Jazz Guitar in the Fall of 2018. During his time at SJSU, he performed with the Latin Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combos, performed Vivaldi's Mandolin Concerto in C major with Collegium chamber orchestra under the direction of Dr. Gordon Haramaki. He also performed with SJSU String Orchestra in SJSU & Hammer Theater production of Bernstein's MASS. In addition to his performance career and studied, Jason was a Teaching Associate and directed the Jazz Ensemble at San Jose State University for 2 semesters. He graduated in May of 2020 with his  M.M. in Jazz Studies, studying under local professional jazz guitarist Rick Vandivier.

In addition to being the band leader and musical director of The New Acoustic Collective, Jason currently performs and records with various ensembles throughout the Bay Area including Vintage Noise Music, The Contemporary Collective, and co-leads Colectivo. ​Nathaniel Grohmann
(Composer/Cello)

Nathaniel Grohmann is a cellist based in the Bay Area. He is currently attending San Jose State studying under cellist Michael Dahlberg. He has also studied under cellists Peter Gelfand and Paul Hyun, as well as been coached by violinists Motoko Toba, Sarah Jones and pianist Gwendolyn Mok. His musical upbringing was mostly classical, and he has been branching out to other genres over the last year. In early 2020 he performed in the San Jose Jazz Winterfest.

Rodrigo Ruiz
​Arco & Pizzicato Double Bass

Victor started his musical journey around age 10 sharing the same dream with a lot of people of becoming a famous rockstar. And thus, he started learning classical guitar around 2011. And he kept taking guitar lessons until his guitar instructor passed several years later. Around his junior year in high school, a friend of Victor invited him to join a youth orchestra group called YMCO. And it was here where he started his musical journey as a classical bassists and decided to pursue music as his career in college. Today, Victor is one of the two classical bassists currently studying at SJSU under the instruction of Bruce Moyer. He has played for the San Jose Wind Symphony, invited to a tour to Argentina and Uruguay by the San Jose Youth Symphony as a ringer, has been a featured artist in the Mercury News, and has also been a recipient of the Leigh Weimers Rising Artist Award. In addition to his musicianship on Double Bass, he started expanding his musical knowledge by starting his studies on the pipe organ with an organist named Harold Stuart and also performs music with his duet partner, who is an accomplished clarinetist and instructor, Morgan Sonnenfeld. ​
